VISIT FROM ASEV JAPAN

In early March, Phoenix wine Club had the pleasure of hosting a visit to Burgundy by Professor Shigeaki ODA, committee chairman of the American society for Enology & Viticulture Japan Chapter (ASEV), and Professor of Agriculture at the University of Kyoto. He was accompanied by Mr SHIMADA, who chairs the wine-tasting group of the Japan Club of Geneva and Mrs Shimada, together with Mr and Mrs UCHITOMI, of the well-known Epiceries UCHITOMI in Geneva and Lausanne, and his assistant from the University of Kyoto, Mr Nagatani.

The group traversed the vineyards of the Côte the d’Or, bustling with work on early spring pruning, along the Routes des Grand Crus from Gevrey-Chambertin to Meursault, with technical explanations of the work by Club Director Antoine ROMERO. At the Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux in Nuits St Georges, Philippe Chevillon provided an excellent briefing on the art of wine-making in Burgundy, as participants tasted three of the wines from his domaine in the Club’s 2015 offer. At The Chateau, they tasted the remainder of the Club’s new range of fine wines and champagnes for 2015.

Professor ODA, who had previously visited the Salon d’Agriculture in Paris, told Yuko MATSUOKA HARRIS that he was particularly interested in encouraging young people beginning their careers in agriculture, including in the wine industry, especially at the regional level.
